第一樂章完結後，大師說：「這個樂章，真的很美。」較早前，基勒博士讀出一封由史密塔納寫給卻佩的信，內容關於史密塔納的失聰問題，寫得感人肺腑。史密塔納說，他一切成就都拜李斯特所賜。終樂章第一小提琴的高音E就像火車的汽笛聲，也是他聽力漸失的時候，耳中不斷聽到的聲音。

After the first movement, the master said, “That is, quite simply, very beautiful.” Earlier, a very touching letter to Kömpel from Smetana concerning his deafness was read aloud by Dr. Gille; in it, Smetana said that he owed everything to Liszt and that the high E in the first violin in the last movement is to be understood as a locomotive whistle representing the sound continually in his ears at the onset of his deafness.
