After the first movement, the master said, “That
is, quite simply, very beautiful.” Earlier, a very touching letter to Kömpel
from Smetana concerning his deafness was read aloud by Dr. Gille; in it,
Smetana said that he owed everything to Liszt and that the high E in the first
violin in the last movement is to be understood as a locomotive whistle
representing the sound continually in his ears at the onset of his deafness.
